SINGAPORE, Oct. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- As the 191st Oktoberfest draws to a close, Asia's appetite for Germany's world-famous beer festival appears to be stronger than ever. Digital travel platform Agoda reveals that accommodation searches from Asian travelers for Germany during the Oktoberfest period have increased from several markets, with interest extending well beyond Munich's Theresienwiese fairgrounds.
Munich Tops the Taps, but Berlin Brews a Surprise
Munich remains the undisputed Oktoberfest capital for Asian travelers, claiming the number one spot among German cities searched for accommodation during the festival period (September 19 – October 4). However, the data reveals that Asian travelers are increasingly looking beyond the beer tents.
Berlin ranked second and noted a 29% year-on-year increase in accommodation searches, suggesting that many travelers are combining Oktoberfest with wider German exploration. Frankfurt claimed third place, followed by Cologne, Hamburg, and Dusseldorf in the top six.
Notably, Bavarian towns near Munich, including Fussen, Augsburg, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, also featured prominently in the top 15 most-searched German cities, pointing to growing interest in Alpine scenery and fairytale castles as part of a broader Oktoberfest itinerary. Stuttgart, home to the Cannstatter Volksfest, Germany's second-largest beer festival also registered increased interest year-on-year.
China Nearly Doubles Its Interest
Among Asian source markets, South Korea and China topped the rankings for overall search volume into Germany during the Oktoberfest window. But the standout story belongs to China, where accommodation searches rose by 98% compared to the same period last year.
India and Japan also recorded increased interest, with searches rising 29% and 25% respectively. Indonesia (+19%), Malaysia (+12%), and Taiwan (+10%) rounded out the list of markets showing accelerating interest.
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President of Supply at Agoda, said: "Oktoberfest has always been one of the world's great cultural events, but what we're seeing now is a new wave of interest from across Asia. From Chinese travelers whose searches have nearly doubled to growing interest from Indian and Japanese travelers, it's clear that the appeal of a German beer festival extends far beyond Europe. What's particularly interesting is that travelers aren't just heading to Munich but appear to be building Oktoberfest into a wider German holiday by exploring Berlin, Frankfurt, and even smaller Bavarian towns."
Munich's Fan Favorites: Japan Leads the Way
Zeroing in on Munich specifically, Japan emerged as the top Asian source market for Oktoberfest accommodation searches in the Bavarian capital, followed by India, South Korea, China, and Taiwan. This differs from the overall Germany ranking, where South Korea and China lead. This suggests Japanese travelers are particularly drawn to the authentic Munich Oktoberfest experience, while travelers from other markets spread their interest across multiple German cities.
The data paints a clear picture of who is searching for Germany for the festival. Just 3% of searches included children, confirming Oktoberfest's status as a decidedly grown-up getaway for Asian travelers.
